Colorado School Tour Questions: A Parent’s Checklist

A school tour is a chance to understand your child’s everyday experience—not just the presentation. Bring a few priorities, ask for concrete examples, and leave room to notice what happens around you. Use these Colorado school tour questions to compare schools on the things that matter to your family.

Start with your family’s priorities

  • What helps my child feel ready to learn, and which two or three needs are most important for us?
  • Which parts of the school day might be difficult for my child, and what would helpful support look like?
  • What trade-offs can our family realistically make around travel, schedule, programs, and cost?
  • Can the school show us how it would respond to one specific situation our child might encounter?

Classroom life and curriculum

  • What does a typical day look like for a student in my child’s grade, including breaks, movement, and outdoor time?
  • How are reading, writing, and math taught, and can you show an example of current student work?
  • How do teachers notice when a student needs more practice or more challenge, and what happens next?
  • What opportunities are there for art, music, physical education, and hands-on learning?
  • What are the expectations for homework and technology use, and how do teachers communicate learning progress?

Belonging and student support

  • How do new students build friendships and find a trusted adult they can turn to?
  • What happens when a student reports bullying, exclusion, or a conflict, and how are families kept informed?
  • How does the school support students with disabilities, IEPs, or 504 plans, and who should we speak with about our child’s needs?
  • What language support is available for students and for family communication?
  • How are counseling and other support services accessed, and what should families know about availability?

Daily logistics and safety

  • What are the arrival and dismissal routines, and how are changes to pickup arrangements verified?
  • What transportation options serve our address, and where can we confirm routes and eligibility?
  • How are visitors checked in, and how does the school communicate about emergencies or weather-related changes?
  • What should families know about meals, allergies, medication, accessibility, and health support during the day?
  • What before- or after-school programs are available, and what are their hours, costs, and signup requirements?
  • Where can we confirm enrollment requirements, application steps, current deadlines, and any fees directly?

What to observe during the tour

  • How do adults speak to students, especially when a student needs help or redirection?
  • Do students have opportunities to ask questions, participate, and approach learning in different ways?
  • What do transitions, hallways, common spaces, and outdoor areas feel like during an ordinary school day?
  • Can students reach and use the learning spaces, bathrooms, and materials they need?
  • Which impressions did I observe directly, and which came from the tour presentation? What still needs a follow-up visit or question?

After the tour: compare and follow up

  • What specific examples did I hear or see that relate to our family’s top priorities?
  • What did my child notice, feel comfortable with, or want to ask about?
  • Which answers are still unclear, and who can confirm them in writing?
  • What should I add to our shortlist notes so we can compare schools without relying on memory?
  • What is our next step, and have we confirmed any relevant application or enrollment deadlines with the school or district?
